Global food CRISIS

I think that the reason food prices are on the rise is because of Genetically Modified Seeds. In the past when farmers harvested their crops, a portion of their seeds were saved for the next planting. Under current Monsanto laws, farmers cannot save seeds from their harvest of genetically modified seeds. They must be purchased every planting season. Monsanto is the giant of genetically modified seeds. They originally made round-up, the weed killer and needed seeds that would not be killed by their toxic product, thus introducing animal life into our food supply. For example, there are soybeans that glow in the dark due to jelly fish. Most recently in my local daily paper I read about human genes being mixed with goats and cows to "improve" their milk, but then that is off the subject of plants. Genetically modified crops are not producing as much as promised and not as much as traditionally grown- ie natural seeds. Click here to read more! A Monsanto official told the New York Times that the corporation should not have to take responsibility for the safety of its food products. "Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food," said Phil Angell, Monsanto's director of corporate communications. "Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA's job."

It makes me so ill. I get so scared whenever that, and a horde of other topics like that are brought up. GMOs are illegal in the UK. Thank goodness for Norway making that Arctic seed bank and thank goodness we're skipping this country in the near future.

The increased demand for meat, the rise in oil prices, and the conversion of farmland dedicated to food production to farmland dedicated to biofuel production are the main culprits of the food crisis. The sad thing is that these are all things that could be controlled or subsidized by world governments. It is sad to know that the U.S. government subsidizes farmers to leave their land idle (in the name of conservation) while crises like this happen. I guess if I were the farmer, I would take the money too. And thank you Bush for subsidizing the production of biofuel around the world.(Obama had been fiercely in favor of biofuels until recently) I mean who thought turning food into fuel was a good idea? Certainly not any of the almost 30 million hungry people in Bangladesh.

The comments from the Monsanto official are expected. They have a virtual monopoly in market for genetically modified seeds and are known for suing those that use their seeds in ways they don't prescribe. I saw a documentary about a Canadian farmer named Percy Shmeiser and his lawsuit with Monsanto a while back. I wish I could remember the name of the film. Has anybody else seen it?

Oh and has anybody heard of OREC? Yeah, like OPEC, but for rice!! Why do some Asian governments think that is ok?

There is an excellent piece that was done on Bill Moyer's Journal concerning what Charla was talking about. It sounded so crazy and shocking I could hardly believe that this is something that continues on and is extremely difficult to overturn.

I saw the doc. The Future of Food and it is so good and informative! . . and really frustrating to see what Monsanto has done. Monsanto = very very bad!!!

And Peter--it even gets worse with some people trying to monopolize water!!!!
